If you are reading this, you probably already know that I really like bicycles. I frequently bike to work, and go on several rides each week. Two years ago I switched the type of saddle I ride. My current saddle is a Selle San Marco Ponza. I can easily ride on it for hours very [...]
Koehlinger Cycling and Fitness is now out of business. Koehlinger’s was where I bought my first `real’ (from a bike store, not a department store) bike, a steel Giant mountain bike. My sister still rides that bike. Koehlinger’s was the best place to find small parts for repairing older bikes, but I was more likely [...]
Today was a beautiful day for a bike ride. It was a warm, sunny day, so all the fair weather cyclists were out. Half way home I had a double flat. A thorn from some brambles cut all the way through several threads in the tire. My first patch didn’t stick. My rubber cement was [...]
(This is a re-post from last week. The original post disappeared in the server change.)
I saw a graph of car and bicycle production in The Economist. The article was On your bike: Obesity and high oil prices are good news for the world’s biggest bikemaker. This was one of the many recent stories on the [...]
Sturmey-Archer is introducing the S3X hub this winter. The S3X is a fixed-gear three-speed hub. This will be about perfect for commuting and winter riding around here. This is one product I have been wanting for several years. I have an old touring frame sitting around begging for this hub. Sturmey-Archer hasn’t made a three-speed [...]
This weekend I was able to go to a Bill Mallonee concert in Zionsville. This time it was Bill Mallonee with Muriah Rose on the keyboard. It was a good concert with some good new songs. Some were so new he needed lyric sheets. The coffee house crowd was quiet and the sound system was [...]
Shimano just officially announced the new Dura-Ace group. Shimano is finally putting the shift cables under the handlebar tape. It looks like a huge improvement over the old Dura-Ace. I still think Dura-Ace is competing against SRAM Force and Campagnolo Chorus, not Red and Record, but it will be a lot closer now.
Yesterday the News-Sentinel ran a bike commuting story. Dean Koehlinger says that Fort Wayne needs bike lanes, not just trails. This is a very good idea. The Rivergreenway bike paths follow the three rivers. This is not an efficient way to get around. There need to be a few sections of trails and bike paths [...]
May 12–16 is Bike to Work Week, part of the League of American Bicyclists’ Bike Month. I have been peddling to work frequently since starting grad school. I have only driven on a few workdays since September. Yesterday I rode my bike to work. After work I rode an extra 72 km. For about a [...]
Last night I received a link to a story about a canoe built of recycled chopsticks. This is an interesting idea, but I wonder about the durability. Granted, that isn’t the point of a project like this, but I like paddling canoes, not just looking at them. It seems that all the extra joints are [...]
